Gong Fu Tea Service
Rock Oolong Teas - Qing Xiang and Rou Gui
Wu Yi, Yunnan, China
Notes:
Qing Xiang “Setting Sun” Rock Oolong
Qing Xiang is one of many different varieties of Rock Oolong, Da Hong Pao, grown in Yu Wi, Yunnan. This lightly roasted oolong is earthy, a little roasty, with deep fruit notes. The aroma will bring out the roast, and the taste is earthy with an undertone of roasted orange peel. Later steeps will bring out the characteristic mineral component that gives Rock Oolongs their name.
Rou Gui “Cinnamon” Rock Oolong, 2017
Aroma is earthy and on the greener side of roasted. The flavor is very mellow and long lasting for many steeps. It might take some of our super tasters to pick out the cinnamon notes while we are steeping it. For me, I didn’t get much cinnamon until trying it the next day at room temperature.
- Tea: 5g
- Water: 5oz., 205°
- Steep: 1, 2, 3, 4
- Time: 10, 15, 20, 25 sec.
Maker’s Notes:
Qing Xiang - Medium to medium-light roast Wu Yi Yan Cha with dominating fruity-candy notes over the roast. Each batch might have slightly different size of the leaves and so the taste.
Rui Gui - Rou Gui means Cinnamon in Chinese (肉桂茶). It's a varietal of Wu Yi Mountain rock tea that has been around since the Qing Dynasty. First flush of spring tea is picked, wilted, fried, wilted again and then lightly roasted to bring out its subtle bouquet of aromas and tastes. Medium roast can be brewed 7 to 10 times easily using the gong fu method of brewing. The brewed tea produces a golden tea soup with hints of fruit and chocolate.
